DIY

knitters, sewers, crafter’s…. we really are a ‘make it yourself’ group. We subscribe to the DIY mantra with a style and vigor that is sometimes completely unbelievable. Spend an hour on Ravelry and its proof positive that great minds are at work out there creating their own.

So why the little build up? I made something myself. Well, I’m not the great & amazing mind who came up with something on my own, but I did execute it with a little style.

You see I recently broke down and purchased a set of the KnitPicks Options needles. And although they provide a plastic case to store them in, I wasn’t happy with that as their permanent storage solution. I like a few of the options available through commercial sources, but to purchase one of these cased would cost almost as much as the set of needles itself. I figured I had to be able to make what I wanted using scrap materials already living in my sewing closet without any additional costs to myself. So that was the goal, make a case for my interchangeable needles using only materials i already had on hand.

Here is is all folded up and sitting on my desk…

And here it is all opened up

The flip pockets store cables

And the centre hosts two rows of pockets for the needles tips

Zipper pockets on both ends give a little storage space for end caps, needle gauge, scissors… really whatever you want to keep with the set.

I only used what fabric and zippers & thread I had on hand (so maybe a brown zipper would have looked a little nicer, but hey, whites okay) And I incorporated design elements from the cases I saw that I liked and changed things to suit my personal taste. It works for me. All in all I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. There are some little things about it that are imperfect, but I’m not producing for sale so I can live with the little imperfections :)

Happy Knitting to me !

Wow- great needle bag! There must have been a lot of measuring going on, and a zipper too!!!

You GO Girl! Looks just as good (if not better, IMHO) as any others I’ve seen for sale! :)

Tell me, do you LOVE your Knit Picks options needles? I’ve been toying with the idea of getting them, but want to get some opinions before I invest. I am a die-hard Addi fan because I just knit without the slippery-ness of the nickle plating. One of the ladies at my LYS has been trying to convince me that the new steel Hiyas are better, but I’m not all that convinced :) So let me know!

I too, am not a fan of the plastic case the Options come in (For the record, Emily, I am quite digging the needles themselves, though.), and have been planning on making them a new case at some point. I really like what you’ve done, and will probably base my design somewhat on this, so thanks for the inspiration!
